Prof Haly’s journey in periodontology is rooted in her academic and clinical experiences. She earned her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BChD) from the University of the Western Cape, where she excelled and received multiple awards. Her early career combined teaching, private practice, and research, culminating in a Masters and later a MChD in Oral Medicine and Periodontology.
Currently, Prof Holmes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontology at the University of the Western Cape. She leads numerous research initiatives, including establishing an oral medicine registry and a saliva biorepository, focusing on oral soft tissue pathologies and HPV-related oral cancer.
Her dedication to research is matched by her commitment to education, having supervised many postgraduate students and contributed significantly to the field through her involvement in various professional committees and workshops.
